endoscopic procedures at the Advanced Surgery Center of Georgia
in Canton, one of the outpatient surgery centers in metro
Atlanta where he practices.

tube-like instrument used to gain access to the abdomen. |
Dr. Lyons has developed two
minimally-invasive procedures in his outstanding career: the
supracervical laparoscopic hysterectomy which heals in two weeks or
less and renders better sexual function post-surgery; and the
laparoscopic Burch procedure, which corrects urinary stress
incontinence. He has trained other surgeons in more than 20 cities
worldwide on these and other endoscopic procedures, including
myomectomy (the removal of uterine fibroid tumors, for women who want
to enhance or retain their reproductive capabilities).

Atlanta GYN
Surgeon Tom Lyons Receives 'Hartman Award'
ATLANTA--Former UGA
All-American center Tom Lyons, M.D., a pioneer in endoscopic laser
surgery, was the 2002 recipient of the Bill Hartman Award, the
highest honor a former UGA student athlete can attain.
Named for Georgia's longtime kicking coach and
chairman of the Georgia Student Educational Fund, the Hartman Award
recognizes former UGA student athletes who have demonstrated
excellence in their profession and/or in service to others by mor
than 20 years of superior performance after graduation.
"We have never had a more Renaissance man," said
Vince Dooley, Georgia's Director of Athletics. "He was an All
America football player, a concert pianist, he conducted the Denver
Symphony Orchestra, he played several years in the NFL with the
Broncos when everyone said he was too little, and he went to medical
school while he was doing it to become a pioneer in his field. There
aren't enough words to describe Tom Lyons."
"I am completely humbled by the Hartman Award,"
said Lyons. "The University has meant so much to me I feel as though
I should be honoring my Alma Mater instead of the reverse.
